THE STORY OF SAINT MARY MacKILLOP
Mary Helen MacKillop was born in Melbourne on 15 January 1842. While working in Penola, South Australia, she joined Father Julian Tenison Woods in opening a school in 1866 for children whose families could not afford an education.
From this work grew the Sisters of Saint Joseph of the Sacred Heart—the Josephites—who provided education and assistance to poor and isolated communities throughout Australia and New Zealand.
Mary’s life was marked by faith, courage and compassion. Despite poverty, illness and many personal hardships, she remained devoted to education and helping people in need.
Mary died in North Sydney on 8 August 1909. She was beatified by Pope John Paul II in Sydney in 1995 and canonised by Pope Benedict XVI in Rome on 17 October 2010.
Saint Mary of the Cross MacKillop became Australia’s first saint. Her example of service, perseverance and hope continues to inspire generations.
“Never see a need without doing something about it.”
